5 Unique Engagement Shoot Ideas You Just Got to Try

Engagement shoots, pre-nup shoots, or pre-wedding shoots—whatever you wish to call it—is essential to any engaged couple. It’s a way to let family and friends (and also everyone on Facebook) know that you're tying the knot. It's also a way to make more memories as boyfriend and girlfriend. But most of all, engagement shoots show everyone the couple’s personality.

Take for example, our couple Christian and Christine. They have a knack for all sorts of board games and are very jolly, very wacky people. So we made sure to incorporate those in the shoot.

Other than the define-the-couple side of the shoot, its success boils down to the theme.

Nowadays, couples add different gimmicks to their engagement shoot. Some go for full-styled shoots. Others go for simpler themes like the nature or garden theme.

Typical nature-themed photo shoots make great photos, but this concept is too common. Not that we're complaining though. Look at how good a simple walk in the park can bring to the shoot.

But if you want your own photo shoot to be out of the ordinary, here are 5 unique engagement shoot ideas you just got to try:

1. Holi Powder

Holi powder is originally used in India’s Holi Festival. Also called “the Festival of Colors,” this event commemorates the victory of good over evil. It's also done to celebrate love and forgiveness.

In other parts of the world, it is commonly used in fun runs, raves, and the like.

This theme is perfect for the adventurous, sporty, and outdoor-loving couple. Holi powder is associated with fun, energy, and vibrancy of life after all.

Even if you’re not exactly an “energetic couple”, having a holi powder-themed shoot is still a good idea. Everything about the theme will give a lively feel to your shoot. Full smiles and a fun time guaranteed.

Plus, just look at the pretty colors!

2. Fairy Lights

If you don’t have the budget to go to a breathtaking location for your shoot, don’t you worry! Fairy lights will make shoots in even the most mundane places a little bit extraordinary.

With their soft glow, these lights are perfect if you're aiming for that laid-back yet romantic kind of feel.

3. Everything Monochromatic

This might be a bit in contrast with the first engagement shoot idea, but hear us out. There is definitely beauty in black and white or straight-up everything monochromatic.

With this concept, you can achieve that classy feel in your shoot.

It can also look sweet, candid, and timeless.

Plus, with the right lighting (and posing), you’d have dramatic photos that are sure to bring out the allure, fierceness, and confidence you didn’t know you have.

4. Fun with Water

Whether you go for a dip or stand under the rain, adding water is a great twist for your engagement shoot.

Only a few couples go for this theme though. Understandably, as most prefer to not get wet with your best clothes, make up and perfectly styled hair on.

But if you’re the couple that’s bold and is willing to go all out, this is the theme you just got to try.

Having a water-themed shoot can look fun and energetic, or intimate and romantic.

Either way, we guarantee that it’ll make you feel like you’re in the next big romantic movie of the year. Standing under the rain with the love of your life… who hasn’t had that fantasy?

5. A Simple Date

This one’s our favorite, as we enjoy and love to capture the moment as it unfolds. That’s our style after all: to turn fleeting moments into timeless memories. It has always been our way of shooting not only engagement shoots, but also all our events coverage. We'd prefer candids over posed shots any day.

And this is what this theme is about: candids. There are no poses, no modifications, no coaching done to the couple whatsoever in this theme.

What’s great about this is that it’s not difficult at all. You won’t have to worry if you’re showing the right angle or if you’re doing the right look. You simply go on a date.

Here, we asked our couple to just have fun and enjoy each other's company, to forget that there was a photographer following them around and taking pictures. To just go about their business, as if we’re not there.

We were very careful not to be spotted and not to disrupt their date in any way. Our team was meters away from them—going in full paparazzi mode. (Thank God for telephoto lenses, right?)

While this concept might not show off the most glamorous side of you as a couple, it shows something greater: what you two are actually like when you’re together.

And the results were awesome.

You can’t pose smiles as genuine as these; you can’t orchestrate a truly romantic scenario. It only comes out when you’re in the moment, when you have that special someone to bring it out of you. By simply going on a date, you feel relaxed. You enjoy your time together, even if it means doing simple things like strolling through the city or checking out different stores. You don’t have to worry about the details of the shoot at all.

For it's certain that you'll look best and happiest when you're just focusing on the person that makes your heart dance. And by not coaching you in any way, we finally and truly get to see you as a couple.

Isn’t this the point of an engagement shoot after all?
